Suggestions for the Junior Year

  • Continue to provide classes that are designed to prepare your child for college;
  • Narrow down your college search.  Take campus tours, list all questions, do research on admissions, scholarships/deadlines, etc.;
  • Have your child take the PSAT/NMSQT.  This is year when it counts!  NOTE:  This test is only offered one time per year during the month of October;
  • Have your your child take the SAT or ACT this year.  Encourage them to take it several times.  (Register for the SAT at http://sat.collegeboard.org/home;  Register for the ACT at http://act.org/;  These tests are offered several times per year);
  • If choosing concurrent enrollment, CLEP or AP Testing, be sure to follow-thru with this decision. (NOTE:  Take care not to earn too many credits in this manner as it can cost your child scholarships that are available to entering college freshman only);
  • Driver’s Education–adhere to state’s requirements as they applied to your child’s age.  Check with your insurance company to see what requirements they have.  Be prepared to provide the most recent copy of the high school transcript.  Make use of all the resources that are available to you;
  • Continue to keep accurate records of classes, honors/awards, credits earned as well as community service, employment and outside activities.  Also record any leadership positions your child may have held in their clubs/organizations, etc.;
  • Update transcript.  Be sure to create back-up files;
  • Start thinking about plans for your child’s senior year (class ring, special activities, graduation ceremony, etc.);
  • Consider having child collect letters of recommendation from co-op teachers, church leaders, employers, etc. to have on-file for college admissions and/or scholarship applications;

~Enjoy the journey…
